French for 'small wheel' Roulette is
very much a gambling game. Depending on which
version, the roulette wheel has either thirty-seven
or thirty-eight individually numbered pockets,
each of which it is equally possible for
the ball to land. The ball itself is thrown
onto the revolving roulette wheel by the
croupier. The whole numbers on the wheel
run from one to thirty-six. Each number is
colored red or black, alternatively. The
wheel also contains the number zero (and
in American roulette it also contains a double-zero).
This pocket (or pockets) is colored green.
Payouts for winning bets placed on single,
whole numbers is at a rate of thirty-five
to one. This is then raised to thirty-six
to one as the bet itself is also returned.
However, in roulette, players are not limited
to betting on the probability of single,
whole numbers. Indeed, they are open to making
bets on several numbers and combinations
of numbers, odds or evens, or colors. However,
the payout odds for these options vary.
